MacFarlan Smith is a pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in Edinburgh, Scotland, founded in 1815. After its sale from Johnson Matthey in June 2022 to Altaris Capital Partners, Macfarlan Smith rebranded as Veranova, formerly known as Johnson Matthey Health. Veranova is a CDMO specialising in the development and manufacturing of specialist and complex APIs. It has facilities across Europe, North America and Asia.

Macfarlan Smith Ltd is part of the Pharmaceutical/Materials division of Johnson Matthey plc and is a manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and fine chemicals and is a world leader in the production of alkaloid opiates and other controlled drugs. The company operates a state-of-the-art plant to the highest level of cGMP, and offers a comprehensive contract manufacturing facility ranging from the development of novel synthetic processes, through lab-scale production to the provision of multi-tonne custom synthesis, including the toll extraction of active principles from natural products. A high level of product containment is maintained throughout the production cycle and all products are isolated in controlled environment finishing suites.
